The prohibition on use of explosives, toxic substances, electrical pulses and other destructive methods in extracting fishery resources is defined in the Law on Fisheries passed by the National Assembly in November 2003.

Pursuant to the law, PM Dung issued Decision 188/QD-TTg dated February 13, 2012 approving a program on protecting and developing aquatic resources through 2020.

However, electrical pulses have still been used, especially in natural lakes, hydropower and irrigation reservoirs, rivers, threatening the protection and development of aquatic resources and undermining ecosystems.

The Government chief urged relevant agencies to identify prohibited aquatic areas, time and fishing tools in fisheries extraction; establish and put 16 maritime protected areas (MPAs) and 45 protected inland areas (PIAs) into operation.

To revive and enrich aquatic resources, PM Dung asked to supplement aquatic breeds in wild waters.

In addition, PM Dung also asked for further dissemination of the Law on Fisheries and relevant regulations in order to improve public awareness of aquatic resource protection and put an end to the use of the destructive methods./.
