The Hanoitimes – The country’s wood exports to Middle Eastern markets increased threefold during the five years from 2009-2013, with the total turnover for 2013 hitting a record US$54.6 million, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).
In the first quarter of 2014, the GSO reports the nation’s wood exports accelerated at a faster pace than last year’s same period by 38% reaching US$18.6 million. The GSO most recent statistics for the first half of the year show the fast paced export trend continued at 37.1% year on year with total exports tallying in at US$37.3 million.
Some key Middle East import markets for Vietnam’s wood products include the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Kuwait and Israel.
Over the past years, the UAE was the largest importer of Vietnamese timber products. In 2012, the country’s wood exports to the lucrative market were estimated at US$12.8 million (comprising 36% of Vietnam’s total wood exports to the Middle East).
