Nhan Dan – Hanoi 1 successfully defended their title at the 2014 National Women’s Football Championships – Thai Son Bac Cup after beating Vietnam Coal and Minerals 1-0 in a second leg match in Nha Trang city, Khanh Hoa province on August 1.

In the last game, regarded as the finals for the capital club, coach Dang Quoc Tuan released his most powerful formation seeking a win. The additional 3 points from a win would crown Hanoi 1 as the champions after their ten games, regardless of the other matches’ results.

However, Hanoi players were cautious and played the first half under some strain from their opposition. The defensive tactics of Vietnam Coal and Minerals caused trouble for the Hanoi’s girls as they denied any chance of a goal.

Hanoi only had two shots on target from Nguyen Thi Thanh and Minh Nguyet during the first half.

Entering the second half, under prolonged heavy rain was unfavourable for both teams but the desire for a victory spurred on Hanoi. Minh Nguyet, Nguyen Thi Muon, and Bui Thuy An got constant opportunities in front of goal but were unable to finish.

It seemed that a goalless match was inevitable until in injury time super-sub Trinh Thi Hoan with a skilful header defeated goalkeeper Thanh Hao of Coal and Minerals team.

The only goal sealed Hanoi 1 a priceless victory, earning them 23 points after ten matches played and successfully defending their championship title.

In other match the same day, TNG Thai Nguyen beat Hanoi 2, 2-1.

The first and second runners-up will be decided after the match between Phong Phu Ha Nam (19 points) and Ho Chi Minh City (12 points) this afternoon.

This is the tenth championship title for Hanoi girls after 17 seasons of the tournament since 1998.

This year’s tournament had the participating six teams compete in a round robin format during the first leg during February-March in Ho Chi Minh City and the second leg which runs from July 18 in Nha Trang.

As soon as the championship has ended, the national women’s football team will gather in Hanoi on August 12 to prepare for the 17th Asian Games scheduled for Incheon, the Republic of Korea this September.
