Export volume of pepper reached an estimated 9,000 tonnes, with a value of USD74 million in July said the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA).

These figures brought total pepper exports in the first seven months of this year to 119,000 tonnes, an increase of 19% in volume over the same period last year. The USD862 million in export value represented an increase of 42% over the previous year, said the association.

This is the seventh consecutive month pepper exports have enjoyed increases in both export volume and value by comparison to other agricultural products. The average pepper export price in the first half this year was USD7,156 per tonne, a year-on-year rise of 9%.

VFA reported that pepper exports to the country’s four largest market in the first and second quarters this year saw sharp growth. The US market witnessed a 29% increase in volume and a 38% rise in value while the UAE had respective increases of 56% and 80%. Other markets of Singapore and India enjoyed two-three fold increases in both export volume and value.

According to VPA, with the stable growth rate over the past months, the value of Vietnam’s pepper exports will hit USD1 billion in 2014, the highest-ever in the country’s pepper sector and affirming Vietnam as the worlds number 1 pepper exporter./.
