Commenting on the proposal, General Phung Quang Thanh, Minister of National Defence, said that the army is building modern Navy, Air Defence-Air Force Service and other arms; thus the current duration of 18 months is not enough for the servicemen to absorb required techniques, tactics; politics; combat stance, and to handle proficiently different kinds of weapons and military equipment and undertake other missions, such as search and rescue, natural disaster control and mass mobilization.

Another reason for the prolonging the term of national service is to save time and materials in enlistment and demobilization because the current law regulates two different length of national service term: 18and 24 months for different units.

Members of the NA’s Standing Committee also discussed temporarily postponing the enlistment of students who are studying at high schools or universities under regular system so as to improve the quality of those being enlisted and ensure social equity in serving national service.

The draft amended Law on National Service is expected to be further discussed at the 8th and approved at the 9th plenary of the 13th National Assembly.
