PANO – Senior Lieutenant General Ngo Xuan Lich, Director of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People’s Army (VPA) held talks with Major General Vilay Lakhamphong, Acting Director of the Lao People’s Army’s General Department of Politics on August 12th in the central city of Da Nang.
They discussed security in the region and in their individual country and also on questions of mutual concerns, reviewed the cooperation in party and politics work over the past time as well as set out cooperation orientations in the time to come.
General Lich informed the guest about Vietnam’s socio-economic developments and the outcome of implementing party and politics work since the beginning of this year, highlighting the firm political stance of officers and soldiers, the improvement of army personnel’s expertise, and measures to raise leadership capability, combat power of party committees and party cells and quality of party members.
He expressed his pleasure at the achievements of set defence cooperation targets since the last meeting between leaders of the two general departments in Luang Prabang city last June and laid stress on the good popularization on the two countries’ important anniversaries and effective friendly exchanges.
The Vietnamese Director of General Department of Politics named some successful bilateral cooperation. Accordingly, the two sides have joined hands in compiling some historical works highlighting the combat solidarity between the two armies. They have cooperated to repatriate additional 633 sets of remains of Vietnamese volunteer troops and experts died serving international obligation in Laos, bringing the number of sets of remains found since 1994 to 16,622. Moreover, the two armies’ special ties have been enhanced via experience sharing.
For his part, Major General Vilay Lakhamphong was touched to meet again his Vietnamese friends, comrades and brothers and thanked the Party, the State, the Army and people of Vietnam for the warm welcome.
During the talks, the two sides agreed to boost education and popularization to raise awareness on the significance of the enhancement of the special ties between the two countries and armies in the new context and the fight to spoil hostile forces’ schemes to undermine the relationship between Vietnam and Laos.
They also agreed to jointly celebrate the 37th anniversary of the signing of Vietnam-Laos Friendship and Cooperation Agreement, the 69th and 39th anniversary of Vietnam and Laos’ National Day, respectively, and the 70th founding anniversary of the Vietnam People’s Army.
Other cooperation activities in the time to come consist of promoting the search for more remains of Vietnamese volunteer troops and experts sacrificed in Laos, developing human resources to serve national development and army building, organizing more exchanges of working missions and reviewing cooperation ties between the two general departments in 2010-2014 period and working out cooperation plans for the coming 5 years.
