Heavy traffic congestion occurred on August 7 on Ha Noi’s downtown street of Dinh Le as customers flocked to the street to buy the products of some famous brand names such as Gucci, Milano and D&G.
The products were offered there at very favourable prices of 70 to 90 per cent discount on their original prices of dozens of millions of dong.
This is not the first time such a craze for top-brand products has been seen in Viet Nam. Every time a shopping centre announces a discount on branded products, large numbers of customers flock to them to hunt for bargains.
What do you think of such crazes for branded products and luxury goods, given that Viet Nam’s GDP per capital was just around US$1,900 a year? Is it perhaps a good sign to show that local customers are interested in authentic products of high quality or an indication of rising consumerism? Do you find the obsession with these products strange at all? Why, or why not?
