— Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc told Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Hiroshi Fukada at a meeting in Hanoi on Friday that Vietnam wishes to enhance its cooperation with Japan to further develop the two countries’ strategic partnership in a sustainable and long-term manner. the Japanese ambassador expressed his wish for the two countries to boost their cooperation in trade, investment, official development assistance (ODA), education and training, and culture.

— Affected by the strike of Air France employees that broke out on September 15 and is expected to last until September 30, Vietnamese national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines have had to cancel nine flights conducted and to be conducted under a business partnership with the French carrier. More than 1,000 passengers have been affected by these cancellations from September 16 to 28.


— The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court on Friday sentenced the former general director of the Agribank Finance Leasing Company No. 2 (ALCII), Vu Quoc Bao, to death on charges of embezzlement. The same penalty was also given to two others of the case’s 11 defendants.


— About 100 workers flocked to the office of Truong Thinh Plastic Joint Stock Company, in Cu Chi District, Ho Chi Minh City, to demand that the company’s management pay them the salaries they have been owed since February this year.


— Police from the Ministry of Public Security yesterday arrested the general director of Hanoi-based VGX Investment Joint Stock Company, Vu Duc Hieu, and the company’s chief accountant Nguyen Thi My Hanh, for illegally trading in gold and foreign currencies.


— The number of foreign visitors to Hanoi over the first nine months of this year amounted to nearly 1.5 million, the Hanoi Statistics Office reported. Holiday-makers visiting the city for pleasure represented 80.4 percent, up by 16.4 percent year on year, while businesspeople accounted for 16.3 percent, up by 20.4 percent.

— Vietnam’s GDP value in the third quarter of 2014 increased by 6.19 percent compared to the same period of last year, the General Department of Statistics reported. With the quarter’s GDP performance, the total value of GDP over the first nine months of this year rose by 5.62 percent year on year.


— Vietnam’s export turnover in the first nine months of 2014 has reached $109.63 billion, a 14.2-per cent year-on-year increase, the General Statistics Office (GSO) reported. The country has also gained a trade surplus of US$2.5 billion in the period. This is the eighth consecutive month that the country has achieved a trade surplus, the GSO said.

— A mission from the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee’s Commission for Propaganda and Education on Friday presented 100 scholarships worth VND50 million (US$2,360) in total to students on Ly Son Island in the central province of Quang Ngai. These students belong to poor families but they have gained outstanding achievements in their studies in the 2013-2014 schoolyear.

— About 30 Vietnamese artists will arrive in South Korea on October 1 to take part in a four-day music program to serve the Vietnamese community in the country. The main show of the program will be conducted from 5 to 7 pm (local time) on October 3 in Hong Seong City, Chung Cheong Nam Province.

— Vietnamese athletes won two bronze medals at the 17th Asian Games (ASIAD 17) in Incheon, South Korea, on Friday. One of the medals earned by swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien in the women’s 200m backstroke event. Thwe send medal came from, shooter Nguyen Thi Thu Hang, who bagged a bronze in the women’s individual 100m running target event. As of 8pm on September 26, Vietnam ranked 13th in the medal table with one gold, six silver and 18 bronze medals. China still dominated the rankings with 91 golds.
