Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister cum chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee Nguyen Xuan Phuc yesterday asked local authorities to mobilize all police forces and traffic inspectors to clamp down on traffic violations.
In his dispatch to the Minister of Public Security, the Minister if Transport and leaders of traffic safety committee in districts, Deputy Prime Minister Phuc ordered to implement measures to ensure traffic safety on the national holidays.
Mr. Phuc ordered police forces and traffic inspectors to handle violations and issue harsh penalties to violators who break the speed limit, drunk while driving, not wearing helmet, and encroaching lines.
Moreover, police forces should pay attention to traffic jam-vulnerable streets, highways to prevent gridlocks in major roads into Ho Chi Minh City.
The Deputy PM asked the Department of Transport to supervise transporting companies to prevent ticket hike in the holidays and overloading.
According to the National Traffic Safety Committee’s report, the number of traffic accidents increased in these holidays this year. For instance, on September 1, the country has 56 traffic accidents, killing 30 people and injuring 29 persons. The number of dead and injured victims nearly doubled the day before on August 31.
On September 1, traffic police forces handled 4,622 violations seizing VND1,933 billion (US$ 91,308) to put into the state treasury. Police also confiscated 12 cars and 1,120 motorbikes. The committee also announced from September 1, police will inspect and control traffic in gateways into city, bus and railway stations to prevent gridlocks in holidays.
From 6PM on September 2, police will block road junction Nguyen Thai Hoc-Tran Hung Dao stopping all kinds of vehicles travelling in Nguyen Tat Thanh to Ton Duc Thang streets until the firework ends.
