According to Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, genetically modified corn varieties with MON 89034 event that more likely to be resistant to scale wing insects of Dekalb Vietnam limited Company (Monsanto Corporation), has been certificated bio-safety by Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. This is the first genetically modified event certified bio-safety in Vietnam. Photo illustration Previously, MON 89034 event has been certificated by Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development on being eligible for producing foods and livestock feeds. Therefore, MON 89034 is also the first genetically modified corn event received two certificates of biosecurity and food safety, livestock feeds so far. According to Genetic Resources Management and Biosecurity Division (Department of Biodiversity Conservation), certificates of biosecurity issued by Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment after a thorough assessment and appraisement process for genetically modified organisms, genetic specimens and products of genetically modified organisms. This evaluation process also complies with the standards of record evaluation and certification of biosafety. It has been conducted in the world. Before being granted biosafety certificates in Vietnam, MON 89034 event has been certified biosafety in eight countries in the world, including: Canada (2008), United States (2008), Japan (2008), Brazil (2009), Argentina (2010), South Africa (2010), Philippines (2010) and Honduras (2010). The decision of Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in the recent years has marked an important step in the process of bio crops applications in Vietnam agriculture. |
