The Malaysian government has set a target of bringing per capita income to 15,000 USD per year by 2019, in a bid to enter the list of high-income economies in 2020.
Bernama news agency quoted Second Ministry of Finance Ahmad Husni Hanadzla as saying that the target is supported by sustainable economic growth and positive development in the global economy.
For the first half of 2014, the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth hit 6.3 percent and is projected to reach 5.5 – 6 percent at the end of this year.
According to the minister, the average household income of 60 percent of Malaysians has increased by 18 percent in the 2012-2014 period to around 1,570 USD a month, while the remaining 40 percent are earning less than this amount.
The Malaysian government would continue to focus on raising household income alongside economic growth to ensure the fair distribution of wealth, he said.-VNA
