HA NOI (VNS) – The Department of Meteorology, Hydrology and Climate Change kicked off a project to decide which technology will work best for combating ozone depletion yesterday in Ha Noi.

The department, housed under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, would run the two-year project with US$290,000 funded by the Global Environment Facility. One or two domestic companies would be selected to test the greenhouse gas-reduction technologies, said Luong Duc Khoa, a representative from the department. After testing, the department would decide whether or not to fully implement the technology.

The department co-hosted the endeavour’s launching ceremony with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation.

In 1994, Viet Nam ratified the Montreal Protocol, an international treaty designed to protect the ozone by phasing out the substances responsible for its disintegration. In signing, Viet Nam agreed to phase out about 900 tonnes of hydro-chlorofluorocarbon, which damages the ozone, by 2020.

Nguyen Van Tue, head of the department, said eradicating the substance would be extremely challenging for Viet Nam, because no other chemical could completely replace its use in air-conditioning and cold storage systems. – VNS
