Over 409,000 Vietnamese people aged below 50 blind

The rate of blind Vietnamese people is 3.1 percent and more than 409,000 people aged below 50 are blind in both eyes, according to a statistic of Vietnam Ophthalmological Society at an annual meeting.


Vietnam Ophthalmological Society and the Central Eye Hospital in Hanoi organized the three day meeting on October 30 in Buon Ma Thuoc Town of the highlands province of Dak Lak, aiming to assess, review and withdraw a lesson from prevention of blindness and visual impairment in the country.


At the meeting, eye experts exchanged and shared their latest scientific researches which have been applied in treating patients recently.



Approximately 3 million have refraction disorders and over 15 percent of the country’s population will suffer this disease.


In addition, the eye health sector is facing a challenge as the number of people who have glaucoma, a disease of the eye characterized by an increase in internal pressure and diabetes people suffering eye diseases are reported to get a raise.


Last year, 200,000 eye operations to remove cataract were performed in the country’s hospitals and more than 43,000 glaucoma patients underwent surgeries.


Around 1,000 leading eye doctors, surgeons in the country and Japanese , Thailand, England, German, Laotian and Singaporean experts took part in the meeting
