Huynh Ngoc Canh, director of the province’s Department of Industry and Trade, told the Daily about the situation at 7 p.m. on December 17. Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Holding Corporation (Vinacomin) sent an additional nine engineers to the site to join the rescue operation.
The ministers of industry and trade, health and construction on December 17 came to the scene to co-lead the rescue operation.
As many as 45 rescuers from the HCMC Fire and Rescue Department on December 17 evening headed for the collapsed tunnel to support the rescue operation, using specialized vehicles.
Le Tan Buu, director of the Fire Department, confirmed the information with the Daily at 3 p.m. on December 17.
The workers’ health conditions are stable thanks to the continuous supplies of oxygen, foods and drinking water. It may take several days to save them, Huynh Ngoc Canh said.
The workers have suffered from hunger and cold for 36 consecutive hours inside the collapsed tunnel at Da Dang hydropower plant.
As many as 70 soldiers of Brigade 25 at Military Zone 7 have come to dig the tunnel to save the victims. However, sludge and floodwaters have hindered their digging effort.
As of 8 p.m. on Monday, the rescue team heard the voice of the stranded workers and provided them with oxygen. Foods were then delivered to them.
The tunnel collapse at 7 a.m. on Monday left 11 employees of Song Da 505 Joint Stock Company stranded, including one woman.
Work on Da Dang-Da Chomo hydropower plant kicked off in 2003. Work on the tunnel began in 2007 with the participation of different contractors.
Long Hoi Company is the project owner of the 22-MW hydropower plant designed to generate nearly 110 million kWh a year. The project is carried out under the format of build-own-operate (BOO) at a cost of VND475 billion.
