PANO – As the key force in natural disaster relief and search and rescue, over the past years, the officers and troops of the whole army have made every effort in training, conducting exercises, and promoting their roles in coping with complicated natural disasters.
Lieutenant General Pham Hoai Giang, Deputy Chief Office of the National Committee for Search and Rescue, Director of the Department of Search and Rescue (the General Staff), reviewed, “Over the past years, there have been serious accidents and disasters occurring. The officers and troops of the whole army have shown high willpower and the spirit of “for the people to serve”, “for the people to sacrifice”, deserving to be the key force in the front of natural disaster relief and search and rescue. The activities have helped significantly reduce the loss of life and properties for the State and the people, contributing to facilitating the sustainable socio-economic development and security of the country, highly appreciated by the Party, the State and the people.”
Since 2004, military units have mobilized hundreds of thousands of participating cadres and soldiers and vehicles to join disaster relief and search and rescue operations, guiding millions of vessels to storm shelters, conducting evacuation for millions of people from dangerous to safe areas, saving 33,655 people and 4,088 vehicles, including 5,380 foreign people and 494 foreign vehicles in 343 cases. Since 2007, twenty two officers and soldiers have heroically sacrificed in action, leaving strong emotions in people’s hearts, becoming the outstanding examples for others to follow.
In the coming time, natural disaster relief and search and rescue missions are still the important tasks of the armed forces in general and the border guards in particular. In order to well implement these tasks, it is necessary to lay stress on conducting training and exercises for cadres and troops. Besides, the party committees and chain-of-commands at all levels need to promote political education to raise morale and build courage and high willpower for soldiers, ready to sacrifice and overcome hardships in performing the missions.
