(VOV) – The 21st meeting of the Mekong River Commission (MRC), underway in Hanoi on January 15-16, aims to review the results achieved in 2014 and map out a course of action for 2015.
The meeting was chaired by Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Nguyen Minh Quang who is also the Chairman of Vietnam National Mekong Committee and the MRC for the term 2014-2015.
In his speech, Minister Quang appreciated the host country Thailand for successfully fulfilling its tasks during the previous term, significantly contributing to the MRC’s achievements.
“Over the past years, the MRC and member states have spared no efforts to realize commitments on the Ho Chi Minh City Declaration and the commission’s joint studies on the management and sustainable development of the basin, including the impact of hydropower electricity on the mainstream of the Mekong River.” He said.
Quang also pointed out challenges related to water resources and the Mekong River resources.
To continue to effectively deal with these challenges, member states asked the MRC to properly implement priority activities targeting joint studies on the management and sustainable development of the Mekong River Basin, he said.
He also underscored the need to set out a development strategy for the period 2016-2020, enhance the autonomy of the commission by devising step by step a roadmap for member states and improve the capacity of the Secretariat.
The meeting will also consider reports on budget for 2015, the progress of joint research on the management and sustainable development of the Mekong River Basin, the progress of implementation of Don Sa-hong hydroelectric power plant project in Laos and the selection of CEO of the MRC Secretariat.
Delegates are expected to adopt the budget and plan of the Commission for 2015 in which priority activities will be defined in the coming period, and call for support from development partners for the MRC’s activities for 2016-2020.
