Celebrating Tet holidays with fascinating folk games

Folk games have often been organized and attracted a large number of visitors at entertainment areas during New Year holidays.


In spite of the spread of online games in the age of the Information Technology, traditional games such as nem con (throwing a sacred ball through the ring), o an quan (a kind of check for children), nhay sap (bamboo pole dance) and others draws much attention of local and foreign visitors.


They make people more fun and exciting as well as remembering their memories of childhood.


Meanwhile children who are living in the city are curious about fun and strange games, they want to explore them.


These games appeared centuries ago and used to be played during the lunar New Year or during festivals in the country.


In addition, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has asked for the Prime Minister’s approval for submitting the ‘Keo Co’ (Tug of War) folk game to UNESCO for recognition as an intangible cultural heritage.


According to the Ministry, the folk game is a unique intangible cultural heritage that is played in many countries in Asia and the Pacific.


Keo Co’ is an ancient folk game of Vietnamese ethnic minority groups such as Kinh, Thai, Tay, Nung, Giay and has been played by generations in the country.


The Ministry has asked the Prime Minister’s approval to cooperate with relevant departments together with South Korea and countries in the region to nominate ‘Keo Co’ folk game for UNESCO recognition as an intangible cultural heritage in the world in 2015.
