HCMC well takes care of poor people during Tet holidays

Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Deputy Chairman Hua Ngoc Thuan affirmed in a report that the city had effectively taken care of poor households in the Lunar New Year celebration (or Tet holiday).


In his report of taking care of Tet holiday for the poor to city’s Party Committee Secretary Le Thanh Hai, and standing members of the Committee on February 24, Mr. Thuan said that the city leaders had done many things to ensure all households to have good holiday.


Though the city still has had difficulties, it tried to give gifts to poor households with more expenditure than last year. Especially, the city expanded its attention to disadvantaged families in war base as well as armed forces and medical workers which have to work in Tet holiday; rehabilitation centers; hospitals; families in the top welfare brackets; senior veterans, families in serving the cause of the nation’s revolution, poor ethnic minority; religion centers, poor workers and families of soldiers who are working in Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago and marine platform DK1.


In addition to bonus for tet holiday, enterprises in the city also gave gifts, vouchers, free bus tickets to return hometown in special holidays as a form of support to workers.


The steering board of the fund for the poor and the Committee of the Fatherland Front spent VND 4 billion (US$187,847) to take care of poverty-stricken in 29 mountainous districts in the North, in the Highlands Vietnam and in the Mekong delta.


Meantime, the fatherland fronts in 24 districts also presented 192,000 gifts worth over VND70 billion (US$ 3,289,465) to beneficiaries of social policies and the municipal labor union and its sub-departments, companies gave gifts worth VND1 trillion (US$ 46,817,267) to 400,000 workers.


The Farmer Association also supported farmers in districts by giving loans of VND11 billion (US$ 516,919) to plant ornamental plants to sell in the occasion.


Total spending on Tet holiday to take of the poor increased by 20 percent compared to last year; of which social contribution is over VND300 billion (US$ 14,043,436). This is a big amount manifesting the spirit of consolidation of city residents and benefactors to the poor, said Standing Deputy Party Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, Mr. Vo Van Thuong.


One of reasons that the city can carry out well its mission in taking care of the poor is that city leaders have mobilize the strength of all sectors and entire machinery of state and all classes of people in the country, said Mr. Hai.


Mr. Hai asked the municipal People’s Committee and district authorities to recheck and take care the disadvantaged households, families in the top welfare brackets and families short of manpower or with old and feeble members.
