About 60,000 travelers, including foreigners, arrived in the southern Vietnamese coastal city of Vung Tau on the third day of Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday for seas bathing and other recreational activities, to avoid the relative hot weather in Ho Chi Minh City and other southern localities over the past few days.

Compared to Friday, February 20, the number of visitors coming to Vung Tau on Saturday was three times higher, the Management Board of Vung Tau City Tourist Areas told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper the same day.

All the beaches in Vung Tau on Saturday were crowded with travelers who enjoyed sea bathing, Tuoi Tre (Youth) correspondents reported from the resort city.

As of Saturday, there were no reports about accidents related to sea bathing, the board said.

The owners of many local hotels told Tuoi Tre that their room occupancy rates increased to 100 percent on Saturday from the appropriate 50 percent during the previous two days.

This full occupancy rate would last at least until the end of Sunday, they added.

Besides beaches, many other attractions in the city including the Bai Truoc Park and the statue of Christ the King, a statue of Jesus standing on Mount Nho, also received a large amount of visitors.

Room charges at many local hotels on the third day of Tet have increased to VND500,000-VND1 million (US$23.4-$46.8) per day from the only VND150,000-300,000 ($7-$14) on the first and second days of Tet, the board said.

The city authorities have set up interdisciplinary inspection teams to ensure safety for visitors and launched some hotlines to receive information related to security, food safety, and overcharging.

As previously reported, the entire 55km Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay, which link the city to its neighboring Dong Nai province, has opened to traffic since February 8, helping cut short the distance between Vung Tau and Ho Chi Minh City from about 120km to 95km.
