Vietnam sees more than 600 deaths from industrial accidents every year, which means over 50 people die from this cause across the country per month, according to the labor ministry.
These striking figures were released in a press briefing on industrial accidents and occupational diseases in 2014 held in Hanoi on Tuesday by the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids, and Social Affairs (MOLISA).
The primary cause of fatal occupational accidents was that employers had not taken measures to ensure labor safety for their employees, the ministry said, citing investigation reports.
As reported by the 63 provinces and cities across the country, 6,709 labor accidents occurred nationwide in 2014, affecting 6,941 people. Of the accidents, 592 killed 630 people.
Dong Nai led the country with 1,462 accidents while Ho Chi Minh City had the highest number of deadly accidents (100 cases), according to the reports.
Other provinces and cities with high numbers of industrial accidents include Hanoi (33 cases), Binh Duong (31 cases), Quang Ninh (31 cases), Hai Duong (23 cases), Thanh Hoa (21 cases), Dong Nai (20 cases), Lai Chau (19 cases), Long An (17 cases), and Lam Dong (16 cases).
According to Ha Tat Thang, director of the MOLISA’s Labor Safety Department, most deadly accidents were caused by employers, accounting for 72.7 percent of the total number of accidents.
Employers failed to train employees in labor safety, did not equip them with labor safety equipment, and failed to provide a safe working environment, Thang said.
In order to enhance awareness of industrial safety, the ministry will run the 17th national week on industrial safety and prevention and explosion fighting from March 15 to 21.
The theme of the week is “every business and laborer should actively prevent industrial accidents, occupational diseases, and explosions to protect themselves and the society.”
The ceremony to launch the week will be held in Dong Xuyen Industrial Park in the southern city of Vung Tau on March 15.
