| Ho Chi Minh City has just made a report about the national action plan for children infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS, until 2010 and vision to 2020. The city now has about 1,800,000 children, of whom 300,000 children reside temporarily. About 25,000 children under 16 years old are infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS. However the amount of children with access to health services is very low with about 6,050 children, including 1,228 HIV/AIDS-infected children. Over the past time, Ho Chi Minh City has established a network to support children infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS. Since 2011, the locality has assigned a staff in each commune, ward and town to be in charge of children and gender equality. The city has also intensified communication, information on important solutions to raise awareness and change behaviour of children and young people in schools and in the community, to help children prevent HIV infection as well as reduce stigma and discrimination against people with HIV/AIDS. Since 2010, more than 700 children have been supported with supplemental food such as milk, sugar, cooking oil, salted shredded meat, baby foods and chicken egg with expenditure of over VND200 million per month. Every year, about 112 children are supported health insurance from projects and 678 other supported from the Ho Chi Minh City Committee for HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control and the Vietnam Administration of AIDS Control (VAAC). In addition, more than 100,000 pregnant women in the city have been consulted and tested and about 500-600 of them have been diagnosed as infected with HIV and have joined mother-to-children HIV transmission treatment program, helping near 200 children escape being infected with HIV from the mother./. |
