(VOV) – On March 31, 132nd Inter-Parliament Assembly (IPU 132) delegates debated key challenges to the provision of better healthcare services for mothers and children.
They reviewed the implementation of the IPU resolution on access to health as a basic right, and shed light on the role of parliaments in ensuring good maternal and child health.
Parliaments from the countries most affected by maternal and child deaths contributed opinions on the issue.
March 31 IPU debate on health for women and children
Representatives from IPU members and the World Health Organization (WHO) emphasised the need to raise public awareness, collect budget for health, establish maternal and child health parliamentary caucuses, and draft new legislation, with a view to increasing access of women and children to medical care.
They called for assistance from the government, relevant agencies, international organizations and civil society to improve health for mothers and children globally.
Libby Davies, a member of parliament from Canada, highlighted the key role of parliaments in securing health of women and children, noting that this is responsibility of both government bodies and the whole community.
Vietnamese women and children in remote areas are now provided with better health care.
Betty Amongi, a MP fromUganda, said last year her government and relevant agencies paid due attention to taking care of women and children, especially those in the most vulnerable groups.
Every woman was tested for HIV, and all new-born babies also received HIV tests. All people positive for HIV were provided with timely treatment and special care, she added.
Most IPU 132 delegates agreed that financial sources hold a vital role in ensuring good health care for women and children in addition to other factors such as legislation, public awareness, and quality of healthcare services in different countries.
