Police in southern Vietnam said Tuesday they are investigating the death of a 4-year-old boy who was allegedly drowned in the sea by his own mother.
Nguyen Thi My Lien, 35, went out with her two children on Sunday afternoon in Go Cong Dong District in Tien Giang Province. She told her mother that she was taking the boys to a doctor.
At around 7:30 p.m., she went home in dripping wet clothes.
“My children are dead”, Lien told her mother before going into the bathroom.
Her mother later discovered that Lien had gulped down lots of medicine in an attempt to kill herself.
Lien was rushed to a local hospital unconscious.
At around 2 a.m. the next day, a couple saw Lien’s oldest child when he was walking along a local road in the dark, crying.
The boy, identified as Bao, was brought home and he later told police that his mother had taken him and his brother to the beach, saying that they would pick some snails.
However, she later dragged both of the boys into the deep water. Bao said he was lucky because the waves sent him back to the shore.
Police discovered the body of his younger brother near a breakwater three hours later.
They will interrogate the mother after she has recovered from her coma.
