(VOV) – An exhibition recapturing images of Hanoi’s old quarter – past and present – opened on April 17 at the Hanoi Old Quarter Culture Exchange Centre at 50 Dao Duy Tu Street in the Hoan Kiem District.

The exhibition, spanning 200 square metres features 100 photographs, documents and short films, has been organized by the Hanoi Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

It creates a vivid and lively space divided into five time frames: 11th-16th century, 17th-19th century, 1884-1954, 1954-1986 and 1986-2014. In each time period, the event showcases different architecture, changing economy, and people’s daily lives.

Although not large in area, the old quarter has always epitomized the convergence many characteristics of urban culture in Vietnam. Even during the rapid growth of Hanoi, today, the old quarter is still the economic-cultural centre, and one of the most appealing tourist sites of the city.

Many residents of the city along with domestic and foreign visitors still regularly travel to the old quarter to learn about and experience the eclectic atmosphere, and have expressed a desire to learn more about it.

“The exhibition provides visitors a better insight into the history of the old quarter and instills in them a deeper appreciation for the beauty and underlying value of the charming neighborhood,” said Pham Tuan Long, deputy manager of the city of Hanoi.

The exhibition is within a cooperation programme between Hanoi and Toulouse city (France) with the purpose of conserving and promoting the intangible values of Hanoi old quarter.
