The most modern walking street in Vietnam, located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, was put into use Monday.
The 60-meter wide Nguyen Hue Street in District 1 has a 27-meter walking section in the middle and a 21-meter section for vehicles – which will be prohibited at certain times – besides pavements.
The street, which runs from Le Thanh Ton Street to Ton Duc Thang Street, has been made over at a cost of VND430 billion (nearly US$20 million).
It has an artistic lighting system, two musical water fountains and carefully selected trees to beautify and provide shade.
Deputy director of the city’s transportation department, Tran Quang Lam, told Thanh Nien News that vehicles are allowed except during certain hours of the day — to be announced — when the entire street would be for pedestrians only.
Local authorities are considering launching many cultural activities on the street, he said.
Work to make over the 600-meter street has been completed in time to celebrate the 40th anniversary of reunification on April 30.
