Norwegian, Vietnamese PMs hold high-level talks

(VOV) -Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung affirmed Vietnam’s recognition of great importance to propelling the friendship and cooperation with traditional friends, including Norway at talks with his Norwegian counterpart Erna Solberg on April 17 in Hanoi.


PM Dung expressed his hope that the visit would contribute to elevating the bilateral ties to new heights.


Both PMs agreed that the two countries boast great potential and advantages in expanding cooperation for mutual benefit and underlined the need to intensify all-level delegation exchange, continue to carry out existing political dialogue mechanisms, and create the best possible conditions for businesses and investors of both countries to augment cooperation.


They agreed to increase cooperation in training activities between universities and research centers, principally in science and technology, oil and gas, energy, aquaculture, agricultural and environmental management, as well as promoting cultural, sports, and tourism exchanges in anticipation of the 45thanniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties in 2016.


The two countries pledged closer cooperation at multilateral forums and in international organizations. Vietnam hailed Norway’s efforts in forging stronger cooperation with ASEAN, especially in both sides’ advantageous fields including maritime security, climate change, and water security.


The two government leaders also compared notes on international issues of shared concern. Regarding the East Sea issue, they shared concern over recent developments in the area, underscoring the need to settle disputes through peaceful measures in accordance with international law, the UN Charter, and the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).


They called on concerned parties to soon build a Code of Conduct (COC) to contribute to ensuring peace, security, navigation and aviation freedom, safety, and trade in the East Sea.


Speaking at a press briefing following talks. PM Dung saidthe Vietnamese and Norwegian governments will strive to speed up the early conclusion of negotiations and signing of the Vietnam-EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) in 2015 that is expected to offer more cooperation opportunities and bolster the friendship between Vietnam and Norway.


The same day, Norwegian PM Erna Solberg was also received by President Truong Tan Sang and National Assembly (NA) Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung.


She also attended an international seminar entitled “From Millennial Development Goals to Sustainable Development Goals: inheriting Vietnam’s achievements in the post 2015 development period”.
