As many as 572 children in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong were examined for heart disease on May 18, with seven prescribed to get heart surgery and 17 referrals to have their hearts re-examined.
The heart examinations were performed by doctors from the Vietnam-Germany Hospital of Hanoi and Children’s Hospital No.2 and the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Ho Chi Minh City.
The examinations are to be continued for children in the northern province of Dien Bien on June 1-2 and the Mekong delta province of Can Tho on June 15 as it takes aim to benefit 1,000 children under 16 in these localities in celebration of Children’s Day (June 1).
The activity is part of the programme ‘A Heart for You’ jointly launched by the military-run Telecom Group (Viettel), the Vietnam Central Television, among other companies.
First launched in 2011, the programme ‘A Heart for You’ has to date provided free heart examinations to over 10,000 children nationwide, 400 of whom have been given free-of-charge surgery to fix their heart defects.
Experts say that early detection of congenital heart defects along with the right treatment can help children with heart disease increase the survival rate and grow as normally as their peers.
