HCM CITY (VNS)— HCM City will not suffer serious flooding in the coming rainy season, a senior official says.
Nguyen Hoang Anh Dung, deputy director of the Steering Centre of the Urban Flood Control Programme, said the municipal administration has accorded high priority to the task of preventing floods.
Several measures taken over the last few years have proved effective, he said, noting that at the end of 2011, the city had 31 flood-prone areas, but 13 of these were no longer susceptible to inundation.
Seven other areas would also be removed from the flood-prone list this year. In these areas, drainage systems would be completed before the rainy season, Dung said.
The remaining 11 areas would be rendered flood-proof by 2015, he added.
However, ongoing infrastructure upgrade projects have made several new areas prone to flooding, like Hoa Binh, Bau Cat, Dong Den and Lac Long Quan streets.
Dung said his centre is working closely with local authorities to improve the situation in these areas.
Tide control
Several projects implemented by the city have helped control tides that cause serious flooding.
One such project in Binh Loi canal, set to be completed next month, will help control flooding in Binh Thanh District.
Another one is the Nhieu Loc – Thi Nghe canal, nearing completion, is the first irrigation project to control tides approved by the Prime Minister.
This project has helped control the impact of high tides in the Sai Gon River in seven inner districts, including Binh Thanh, Phu Nhuan, Tan Binh and Go Vap.
There are currently 10 areas prone to high-tide flooding.
Heavy downpours last Thursday (May 16) caused serious flooding at both ends of the Rach Chiec Bridge on Ha Noi Highway in District 9 and many vehicles were stranded after their engines stalled. — VNS
