On May 18, the Ministry of Transport began construction of the last tunnel project on National Highway 1A that will run through Phuoc Tuong and Phu Gia Mountain Passes in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue, at a ground breaking ceremony attended by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.
The six kilometer tunnel is designed to have two lanes for motor vehicles and will be built under BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) method at a total estimated cost of VND1.74 trillion (US$83.20 million).
Construction of the tunnel is scheduled to complete in 18 months. The project investor is expected to recover capital in 18 years and seven months after the tunnel comes into operation.
Nguyen Van Cao, chairman of the People’s Committee in Thua Thien-Hue Province, said that when the tunnel opens for traffic by the end of 2014, it will help ease the increasing traffic pressure on Highway 1A and reduce the number of traffic accidents on the Phu Gia and Phuoc Tuong Mountain Passes.
Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said the tunnel project will help boost economic development in the area.
He instructed the investor to closely work with the province to implement the project and ensure quality and steady progress so as to complete on time.
On the same day, the provincial People’s Committee also began construction of another project to broaden a 31 kilometer stretch of National Highway 1A.
The Highway will be raised by 20.5m and extended into four lanes under BOT method at a cost of VND1.83 trillion (US$87.49 million).
