Microsoft today organised the second NGO Connection Day in Vietnam, aiming to facilitate the chance for NGOs sharing and networking as well as demonstrating the modern IT trends.
The firm also showcased the latest technologies and solutions, which could help NGOs apply in this sector so as to serve the local communities better. VIR’s Hoang Anh talks with Clair Deevy, Citizenship lead, Microsoft Asia Pacific about the initiative.
Could you shed the light on Microsoft’s NGO Connection Day programme globally?
Since 2005, Microsoft has hosted NGO Connection Day throughout the world to raise awareness and help build IT capacity in the NGO sector. We run approximately 100 of these events around the world every year. Microsoft’s NGO Connection Day is a programme set up primarily to assist organisations achieve their goals and objectives. It emphasises the use of technology as a tool for effectively working on projects and programmes. This programme has partnered with thousands of NGOs around the world and has been providing resources including financial support to them. Technologically, Microsoft has been assisting NGOs in their use of software, through in-person and online training, including tools that help them collaborate, communicate and work more efficiently.
Why does Microsoft choose NGOs to provide technology support?
Microsoft enables people and enterprises around the world reach their full potential. As for NGOs, they have close connections with the communities they serve and provide invaluable services to those communities. Through technology support for NGOs, Microsoft is able to help them enhance their ability and improve their services to those communities.
In your opinion, what are challenges facing NGOs in Vietnam?
As with other NGOs around the world, the challenges faced by the ones in Vietnam are very similar, that include: fundraising, limited financial and management expertise and limited ICT capacity. They are asked to do more with fewer resources, but also in an environment where the sector is still nascent and requires a lot of support from the public and private sectors.
What benefits will NGOs in Vietnam get from the NGO Connection Day?
During the event, Microsoft and our partners will showcase how technology can help NGOs improve their productivity; solve problems of the shortage of financial resources to support socio-economic growth goals for Vietnam. We will also introduce a series of new software that help NGOs overcome their current challenges as Office 2013, SharePoint and Lync 2013. I believe that our in-depth knowledge and best practices in IT industry can support them to work effectively.
