(VOV) – Although Bebinca dissipated after making landfall on June 23, it pounded north-central coastal provinces, causing great material damage.

Initial reports show that the tropical storm has destroyed tens of thousands of hectares of aquatic farms and subsidiary crops, and damaged kilometres of dykes.

Violent floodwaters caused by torrential rains washed away two local residents in Nghe An, according to the Central Committee for Flood and Storm Control.

Nearly 300m of sea dykes in Haiphong, Quang Ninh and Thai Binh were severely breached, threatening the lives of local residents living nearby.

Haiphong, Thai Binh and Nam Dinh had evacuated a total of 4,900 households in vulnerable areas to safe grounds before the storm swept through.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat has asked his relevant agencies and storm-stricken localities to refill the breached dykes to be prepared for the upcoming storms.

In Haiphong alone, high tidal surges damaged more than 100m of sea embankment, 2,350ha of aquatic farming areas, and 44ha of subsidiary crops.

In Nam Dinh province, more than 100m of sea embankment in tourist resorts were breached, 450 shrimp and fishing ponds were submerged, and 100 fish care shelters were destroyed.

Torrential rains flooded major arteries in Ha Tinh province, disrupting traffic flows. Nearly 1,500ha of rice, subsidiary crops and fishing ponds were inundated.

The weakened storm also dumped heavy rains on the capital city of Hanoi in the early morning of June 24, which coincided with peak hours, causing traffic flow difficulty.
