Ba Ria-Vung Tau hosts Vietsopetro volleyball champs

(VOV) -The 8th Vietsopetro International Women’s Volleyball Championships is taking place in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau from July 6-8.


The event is jointly held by the Vietnam Volleyball Federation, the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the joint venture Vietsovpetro.


Two Vietnamese clubs, Vietsopetro and Saigon Beer-Thai Binh, along with the Australian and Kazakhstan national teams, will play in the round robin series.


Vietsopetro was the champion of the A1 division in 2007, bronze medallist in the Hung Vuong cup in 2009 and runner-up in the national league in 2010.


Saigon Beer-Thai Binh dominated the A1 division in 2011 and recently won the Sanatech Ben Tre tournament.


Kazakhstan bagged a silver medal at the Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship in 2010 and a bronze at the Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship last year, while Australia is among Asia’s stronger teams.


In the opening match on July 6, Vietsopetro narrowly defeated Australia 3-1.
