LANG SON (VNS)— City Police have arrested a couple for allegedly appropriating hundreds of billions of dong from neighbours and residents in northern Lang Son province.
The couple had borrowed nearly VND100 billion (US$4.7 million) from locals in Trang Dinh District and attempted to flee before they were apprehended by local authorities.
According to police, it is the largest attempted robbery in the mountainous border province of Lang Son.
Nguyen Van Trung, 46 and Ta Bich Lien, 40, had also borrowed funds from residents in nearby cities before attempting to escape.
Director of City Police, Hoang Anh, said police received a tip off from concerned lenders in Lang Son, saying the couple had borrowed more than VND400 billion ($19 million) and were defaulting on payments.
The couple reportedly paid back some of the loans to gain the trust of lenders before delaying repayments. Residents notified the police when the couple and their two children were seen getting into taxies on July 19.
Vietnam News Agency correspondents have confirmed that Trung and Lien began borrowing money in 2010, promising to repay loans at a high interest rate, between 6-9 per cent, in order to raise funds.
Loans ranged from as low as several million dong up to nearly VND100 billion.
As recent as this year, the couple were promising higher interest repayments to lenders, prompting many to mortgage their houses to lend money.
City police are collecting evidence to conduct a full investigation on the case. — VNS
