Mountainous North targets 8% growth rate by 2020

VGP – The PM has passed a master development plan for the Northern Midlands and Mountainous Area by 2020. Accordingly, the region would strive for 7.5% GDP growth rate in 2011-2015, over 8% in 2016-2020, and around US$2,000 GDP per capita.

By 2015, the region’s economic structure would be transformed to the direction in which agro-forestry and fishery make up 27%; industry-construction 34.1%; service 38.9%. By 2020, the structure would be shifted to 21.9%; 38.7% and 39.4%, respectively.

The poverty rate would drop yearly by 3-4% and 250,000-300,000 jobs would be generated in every five years.


The agro-forestry and fishery sector would grow at an average rate of 4-4.5% per year in 2011-2015 and 3.5-4% in 2016-2020.


The agricultural sector would focus on formulating areas specializing in growing of tea, rubber, coffee, fruits, herbal medicine and breeding farms.


Particularly, the region will develop the competent food processing industry, mining industry and commodity industry. Industrial production output would advance over 11.5% in the first five years and 12.6% in the following term.


In addition, education and training would be renovated to respond to market signals, of which ethnic minority staffs would be given priority.


Meanwhile, healthcare services would be improved and the national target programs on healthcare would be fulfilled on diseases such as malaria, malnutrition, mother and child care, and epidemic prevention./.
