Residents contribute to public infrastructure

Residents in rural areas have donated a total of more than 12 million square metres of land to build roads and public infrastructure over the past five years, the Viet Nam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee reported at a meeting on Tuesday.


The meeting was held to review the implementation of the Government’s Resolution on agriculture, farmers and rural areas.


The VFF committees at all levels has mobilised thousands of billions of dong to build infrastructure in communes, and has also built and repaired more than 440,000 houses.

Rural residents get vocational training


More than 1 million people in rural areas have taken vocational classes over the past three years, equal to 77.7 per cent of the country’s target, the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs reported on Tuesday.


Of the figure, more than 220,000 were members of ethnic minority groups living in 51 provinces and cities.

North-South railway renovations to cost $1.9m


Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Ngoc Dong on Monday worked with officials on a detailed plan to renovate the North-South Railway. The total cost would be VND39.9 trillion (US$1.9 billion).


The North-South Railway, which has a total length of 1,726km and runs from Ha Noi to HCM City, has many important sections that are often flooded and eroded. Several facilities, including railway equipment, are outdated.

Dengue fever enters peak season


More than 29,500 dengue fever cases occurred in 46 provinces and cities this year, leaving 19 people dead, according to the Ministry of Health’s Preventive Medicine Department.


Dengue fever has been increasing rapidly in the central and southern provinces. It is expected to occur more frequently in the rainy season, according to Nguyen Van Binh, the department head.
