VGP – State President Truong Tan Sang’s upcoming visit to the US is of significant importance, opening a new chapter for the advancement of bilateral relations, a diplomat said.
State President Sang will embark on an official visit to the US from July 24-26, at the invitation of President Barack Obama.
This is the second official visit of a Vietnamese Head of State to the US since the two countries normalized relations nearly two decades ago.
The visit is also part of Viet Nam’s effort to actively realize its foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multi-lateralization and diversification of international relations.
During his stay in the US, State President Sang is expected to hold talks with President Obama, meet with leaders of US Congress, congressmen, business leaders, scholars, leaders of some international organizations, and Vietnamese community.
Both sides will exchange views on vision of the bilateral ties as well as regional and international issues of common concern, according to Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Nguyen Quoc Cuong.
The relationship between Viet Nam and the US is based on a firm background with a number of stable cooperation mechanisms, noted the diplomat.
He expressed his optimism about the prospect of the relationship between Viet Nam and the US.
“It has been nearly a decade since the two countries agreed to develop a constructive, friendly, multi-faceted cooperative partnership on the basis of mutual respect and mutual benefit” in 2005 and with their potentials, it is time for the two countries to set up a new framework for the relationship.
Ambassador Cuong said he expects the two leaders would identify the new framework with definite principles and contents.
Regarding human rights and religious freedom issues, Ambassador Cuong agreed that divergences still remain. However, the two sides are ready to exchange frank views in order to enhance mutual understanding and narrow gap, he affirmed.
Cuong said only with friendship, equal cooperation for mutual benefit on the basis of the UN Charter and international law and with respect to political regime, independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, can we push the Viet Nam-US relations ahead to meet the common desire and interests of the two people./.
