PANO – Leaders of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army (VPA) received Filipino and Singaporean generals during their working visits to Vietnam at the Headquarters of the Ministry of National Defence on July 23rd.
On behalf of leaders of the Ministry of National Defence, Senior Lieutenant-General Do Ba Ty, Chief of the General Staff cum Deputy Defence Minister, welcomed Lieutenant-General Noel A. Coballes, Commanding Officer of the Philippine Army, and believed that his visit to Vietnam would strengthen the friendship, cooperation and mutual understanding between the two nations’ peoples and armies.
The Vietnamese general underlined that the cooperation ties have been ceaselessly developed in various fields, including the national defence cooperation, especially since their Memorandum of Understanding on National Defence Cooperation signed in 2010.
For his part, Lieutenant-General Coballes thanked the host for his warm welcome and briefed him on the results of talks with Lieutenant-General Nguyen Quoc Khanh, Deputy Chief of the VPA’s General Staff. The Filipino general said that the two nations’ defence cooperation will see new development in the coming time.Speaking highly of the talks’ results, General Ty urged the two sides to continue fostering cooperation in exchanging delegations and information at all levels, experience on anti-terrorism, UN peace keeping, and natural disaster prevention and control.
Earlier, Lieutenant-General Nguyen Quoc Khanh held talks with Lieutenant-General Coballes. They briefed each other on the two armies’ structures and tasks, as well as agreed on signing a cooperation agreement and hosting army consultancy dialogues.
The same day, Lieutenant-General Vo Van Tuan, Deputy Chief of the VPA’s General Staff, met with Brigadier General Chieng Siak Kian, Director of the Defence Policy Office of the Singapore Ministry of Defence.
General Tuan appreciated the results of a working session between the Singapore delegation and the Department of Foreign Relations of the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defence, and said that the two sides should recommend leaders of the two ministries to promote their cooperation, especially in education and training, the navy and young officer exchanges.
