Recently in Quan Ba district, the People’s Committee of Ha Giang province held a workshop on detailed planning for Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark to seek consultations of authorities, academics and experts on contents of detailed planning, selection of agencies in charge, consultants and coordinators for building detailed planning options.

Notable central-level attendants included UNESCO National Commission; Vietnam National University of Hanoi; Institute of Geology affiliated to the Vietnam Academy of Sciences; Tourism Development Research Institute; Urban and Rural Architecture Planning Institute; Vietnam Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources; Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations; Vietnam Academy for Water Resources; and Tourism and Cultural Development Institute. Ha Giang province’s high-ranking officials consisted of Mr Trieu Tai Vinh, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee; Mr Ban Duc Vinh, Member of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of Ha Giang Fatherland Front Committee; and many experts and officials responsible for guiding the construction and development of the detailed planning. Mr Sen Chin Ly, Vice Chairman of Ha Giang Provincial People’s Committee, chaired the workshop.

Most experts supported community development; reciprocated conservation and development relations; creation of uniqueness; and transformation of natural difficulties into advantages. The planning was expected to be based on the following specific objectives: Heritage conservation (geology, culture and biological diversity) and tourism development based on utilisation of heritages and participation of indigenous peoples, expected to make the geopark an important economic region by 2030. This region will have four tourism centres, including Dong Van Culture – History Centre; Quan Ba High-grade Tourism and Entertainment Centre; Yen Minh Green Urban Eco-tourism Centre; and Meo Vac Adventure Tourism, Scientific Tourism, and Commercial Tourism Centre.

Delivering a speech to the conference, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee Trieu Tai Vinh valued the expert opinions of scientists and specialists, and appreciated the support of central and local agencies for the geopark’s development. He hoped that Ha Giang will become a major producer of medicinal plants and a major tourist hub as stated in development plans towards 2020 and 2030. This prospect will need the support of relevant central and local agencies, scientists, and specialists and require timely implementation of planning. The Dong Van Geopark will undergo a status reassessment of the Global Network of Geoparks in 2014.
