Manyimportant activities

This year marks the fourth time that Brunei Darussalam has chaired ASEAN. This year’s theme for the Chairmanship is “Our People, Our Future Together”. The theme stresses the role of the people in ASEAN Member States in advancing cooperation in the areas of political-security, economic and socio-cultural. It also asserts that the region’s future is dependent on how the people of ASEAN move and work together to ensure progress for the development of the whole region.

Under Brunei Darussalam’s Chairmanship, ASEAN will enhance the role of youths in order to promote a region-wide sense of belonging. Other themes will include discussing environmental issues like climate change and natural disasters, tackling food and energy security, and addressing poverty eradication, sustainable development, and closing the income gap within ASEAN through economic integration.

ASEAN BIS 2013 expects to attract 500 delegates consisting of regional and global corporations, dignitaries, academics and thought leaders from the dynamic ASEAN region. This event provides the business community with an opportunity to highlight prioritized concerns needed to boost trade and investment; and importantly, as AEC takes shape, to ensure that economic growth is on track, sustainable and inclusive.

Over the four days, high-level leaders including ASEAN economic and trade ministers, as well as CEOs and presidents of key industries, will be speaking and discussing on a number of other key topics including: ASEAN 2015 – Turning Vision Into Reality: Where Are We At?; Levelling The Playing Field: The Next Steps For ASEAN; RCEP – The Road To Growth And Prosperity; Accelerating ASEAN Connectivity – Linkages For Growth; Food For Thought – Securing Food Supply For A Sustainable Future; Moving Ahead Together – What Next? AEC shall be the goal of regional economic integration by 2015. AEC envisages the following key characteristics: A single market and production base; A highly competitive economic region, A region of equitable economic development; and a region fully integrated into the global economy.

Over the years, some recommendations have been incorporated into the guidelines of the overall AEC agenda, highlighting the important role that the private sector has in the realisation of the ASEAN single market goal by 2015.

The importance of the private sector in ASEAN’s journey towards the establishment of AEC by 2015 will be highlighted at ASEAN BIS 2013.

According to Dr Doan Duy Khuong, Vice President of Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI),ASEAN BIS 2013 provides a platform for the business community to engage with ASEAN Leaders and Economic Ministers, as well as key decision makers. This annual summit aims to increase ASEAN’s attractiveness as a region for trade and investment and enhance regional competitiveness. ASEAN BIS enables participants to be updated on new trends and challenges and to evaluate how these will impact on business.

The Summit will also provide an opportunity for the private sector and the business community to highlight areas of concern needed to boost the region’s trade and investment and how economic growth can be sustained in view of the AEC goal.
