(VOV) – Defence Minister General Phung Quang Thanhis expected to have a bilateral meeting with US Secretary of Defence Chuck Hagel on the sidelines of an ongoing ASEAN meeting in Brunei.
Vietnam and the US signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Advancing Bilateral Defense Cooperation in 2011. Both sides vowed to fully implement the MoU during talks in Washington DC on July 25, 2013 between Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang and US President Barack Obama.
The two Presidents agreed to expand mutually beneficial cooperation to enhance capabilities such as search and rescue and disaster response.
They also underscored the importance of enhanced cooperation in non-traditional security matters and agreed to work more closely to counter terrorism, enhance maritime law enforcement cooperation, combat transnational crime including piracy, and narcotics, human, and wildlife trafficking, and address high-tech crime and cyber security.
General Thanh is in Brunei for an ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Retreat (ADMM Retreat) which opened in Bandar Seri Begawan capital on August 28.
The ministers reviewed regional security situation and defence cooperation within ASEAN and between ASEAN and its partners in such prioritised areas as humanitarian aid, disaster response, military medicine, peacekeeping activity, marine security and counterterrorism.
They also examined key issues to be tabled at the second ASEAN Defence Ministers Meeting Plus (ADMM+) due to open on August 29.
Earlier General Thanh visited the Philippines on August 26-27 where he held talks with Secretary of Defence Voltaire Tuvera Gazmin and met with President Benigno S. Aquino III.
