(VOV) -The Vietnam-UK Friendship Association (VUFA) has held its third congress in Hanoi on August 24.
Delegates elected 40 members to the Executive Board for its 2013-2018 term, with Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) Deputy Chairman Hoang Van Dung voted as VUFA Chair.
In his opening speech, Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO) President Vu Xuan Hong praised the VUFA’s activities during the previous term. He described the current congress as an important contribution to the people-to-people diplomacy goals elaborated by the 11th National Party Congress and the 6th VUFO Congress.
Maintaining its traditional friendships and partnerships is no longer sufficient. The VUFA needs to forge new paths towards improving its effectiveness, diversifying its operations to strengthen Vietnam-UK ties in economics, trade, culture, and education, Hong said.
British Embassy First Secretary Andrew Holt expressed his belief that the VUFA will help deepen the mutual understanding shared by the two nations’ peoples.
Relations between Vietnam and the UK were reinvigorated following their upgrade to a strategic partnership status in September 2010.
Two-way trade turnover reached nearly US$3.5 billion in 2012. The UK’s US$2.629 billion in registered capital as of last September ranked it fourth among the 20 EU member nations investing in Vietnam.
