A poor girl with cerebral palsy in Thanh Hoa Province has to take care of housework after her mother had an accident.
Nguyen Thi Xoan The 17-year-old girl, Nguyen Thi Xoan, was diagnosed with the illness before birth, but because of the financial situation of her family she has never received proper treatment. She needs a wheelchair to get around and her head is abnormally large. This disability made it impossible for her to attend school.
Since the family has two other children, poverty has been a constant fact of life. The parents try their best to find any jobs they can, mostly manual, but they have been unable to change their living conditions.
Xoan tends to her mother Recently, Xoan’s mother broke her left leg on her way back home, forcing her family to borrow money for treatment. They could only afford acute treatment. Her doctor said, when she was discharged, that it would take her two years to be able to walk again.
This has left much of the family burden on Xoan. Her brothers are contemplating dropping out of school to help out.
Xoan and her brother Xoan’s mother said, “I feel helpless because I can’t do anything but lie in one place. Every day my husband goes to work and, since the two other children are at school, Xoan has to take care of the housework and also look after me.”
Xoan also feels extremely depressed about the situation. “I am helpless too. Sometimes I even think that death might be an escape. My parents wouldn’t have to worry about me anymore. It’s really terrible that my brothers are thinking about quitting school.”
