BA RIA-VUNG TAU (VNS)— An “anti-terrorism” drill was held yesterday in the coastal city of Vung Tau by the Ministry of Public Security and Viet Nam National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam).
The drill, which had more than 1,000 participants, involved a simulated dispute between some farmers and the Phu My Fertiliser Plant in Phu My 1 Industrial Park in Tan Thanh District, in which the farmers encroach on the area belonging to the plant’s gas-pipe system.
The situation worsens when some “extreme elements” enticed thousands of people to protest in front of the plant. The situation later goes beyond the control of the plant’s security staff, the directorial board and local police.
To prevent a riot from happening, the Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province Anti-Terrorism Steering Committee directs the provincial police force to block some major streets surrounding the area and requests the Ministry of Public Security to provide reinforcements to deal with the protest.
The simulation included fighting to prevent terrorist elements from taking advantage of the crowd to attack the mobile police force with petrol bombs and handmade grenades and set fire to many objects and hold workers hostage in the plant.
Organisers said the drill helped prepare local forces for situations that threaten the nation’s peace and security. — VNS
