(VOV) – Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Cao Duc Phat and World Bank (WB) Country Director Victoria Kwakwa have reviewed the results of new rural area development and WB-funded poverty reduction projects in Yen Bai province.
The results were announced at a working session between Minister Phat and Kwakwa during their delegation’s fact-finding tour of the northern mountainous province of Yen Bai on August 16.
At the meeting, provincial People’s Committee Chairman Pham Duy Cuong expressed his hopes concerning the international institution’s poverty reduction and medical financing’s long-term future.
Cuong would like the WB to extend its funding until 2017.
More than half of Yen Bai’s recent ODA has come from the WB, including a 29 village rural energy project, transport upgrades, educational quality improvements, and a HIV/AIDS prevention scheme.
The money has financed the upkeep of 542km of electricity lines, the installation of nearly 7,800 electricity meters, 26km of new roads, 50 new classrooms, 48 school sanitation works, and 39 new HIV/AIDS prevention clubs. A Common Interest Group involving 3,375 members was established to encourage sustainable plantation and animal husbandry.
The touring delegation reported Yen Bai new rural area development programme is behind schedule.
Progress has yet to be made on a range of economic and infrastructure priorities. But Yen Bai, a poor mountainous region, began from a lower level than many of its rural counterparts. Investment has also proven difficult to attract.
The delegation urged the province to focus on ensuring locals are aware of the programme’s importance and work together on removing the obstacles hindering its success.
