Journalist charged with ‘receiving bribe'

HCM CITY (VNS)— The Public Security Ministry on Saturday confirmed with Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that it has prosecuted and temporarily detained a reporter from Phap Luat HCMC (Law HCM City) newspaper for allegedly asking for a bribe.

Earlier this month, the 31-year-old reporter, Vo Thanh Tung from Dong Nai Province, was caught by the police accepting VND50 million (US$2,500) from the owner of a bar called MTM in Bien Hoa City.

Along with Tung, two other writers were also prosecuted. Apparently, the reporters had written a series of articles on violations of the bars in Dong Nai, including MTM bar.

The owner of the bar had arranged to meet with the reporters to ask them to stop their reports. Tung's group asked the bar to pay $10,000 on top of the VND15 million ($715) the owner had already given them.

Pham Phu Tam, editor of Phap Luat, told Tuoi Tre that he had not received any official information from the police or other authorities regarding the case. — VNS
