Millions back to school in HCM City

Nearly 1.1 million students from primary to high schools in HCM City started the 2013-214 academic year on Monday.


The city built more than 1,200 new classrooms for schools in suburban districts during the summer vacation and the rooms are ready for the new school year.

Soldiers donate blood in central VN


Organisers of a blood donation campaign last week collected 2,000 units of 350ml each from officers and soldiers of the 15th Battalion Command based in the Central Highlands.


The campaign, called “Red Connection in Central Highlands,” is organised by the Central Haematology and Blood Transfusion Institute and Gia Lai Province’s Red Cross chapter.


The campaign aims to collect more than 3,000 blood units for hospitals in Gia Lai and Pleiku provinces.

HCM City plans new bonds issue


The HCM City People’s Committee will this month issue VND1.5trillion (US$71.4 million) worth of bonds in the domestic market to invest in socio-economic development projects.


For this year, the city plans to issue VND3 trillion worth of three and five-year bonds.

Ca Mau employers fail to pay premiums


The Social Insurance Agency in the southernmost province of Ca Mau says that as of July, 14 seafood businesses owed more than VND21.5 billion (US$1 million) in social and health insurance premiums for their workers.

Steel prices inch up


Construction steel prices increased VND150,000 (US$7.14) per tonne starting Monday under the impact of higher transport and electricity fees.


According to the Viet Nam Steel Association, its members sold 2.6 million tonnes of construction steel in the first seven months of this year, up three per cent year-on-year.
