(VEN) – Many Japanese hi-tech companies operating in Vietnam, including Nastec Vietnam based in the Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park in Binh Duong Province, will be introducing their products and services at Manufacturing Expo and Metalex Vietnam exhibitions to be held in October in Ho Chi Minh City. Vietnam Economic News’ Ngoc Long spoke with Nastec Vietnam General Director Kiyoshi Hattori about the company’s operations and why Nastec Vietnam attends the exhibitions.
Could you tell us about the company’s operations?
Nastec Vietnam manufactures cutting tools for special use from carbide alloys according to the order of partners. About 95 percent of the company’s products were exported to Japan. Nastec Vietnam will expand sales in Vietnam as Vietnamese industry is developing.
Why Nastec chose Vietnam to invest?
Nastec built its factory in China in 1992 to manufacture products for export to Japan. In China, along with economic development, the demand for Nastec products increased considerably and 80 percent of China-based Nastec factory’s products were sold in China. The company wanted to construct one more production facility to increase capacity. It chose Vietnam after surveys in Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam because of low labor costs in Vietnam, good relations between Vietnam and Japan, and the development potential in the Vietnamese market. We built our factory in Binh Duong Province because Binh Duong has mild weather and developed infrastructure and is located close to Ho Chi Minh City from which there are many direct flights to Japan. We got an investment license in 2004, while our factory began operation in 2005.
How does Nastec Vietnam train its technicians?
Nastec Vietnam products are for special use and technically sophisticated. It takes a new Nastec worker at least three years to do a good job and understand technical drawings himself. We now have 180 staff members working in a highly demanding working environment, 10 of whom are excellent workers. For us, it is important for a worker to have career awareness before learning how to do a job. We constructed work policies that allow workers to work in all situations including situations without participation of Japanese specialists. Business ethics were formed in Nastec Vietnam, which feature both Vietnamese and Japanese cultures.
What for Nastec Vietnam attends Manufacturing Expo and Metalex Vietnam exhibitions?
After eight years of operation in Vietnam we have realized that support industries in Vietnam have been improving, and that there are manufacturers in the country that would want our products, so we decided to participate in the exhibitions to introduce our products. We believe that there will be many Vietnamese companies buying our products in the next 5-10 years, and that Nastec Vietnam cutting tools will be used widely in Vietnam. We will see how businesses from Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia assess our products./.
