HA NOI (VNS)— Storm Jebi, the fifth tropical storm of this year to hit the East Sea, was continuing to gain strength and cause bad weather off the coast of Viet Nam, warned the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

Director the centre Bui Minh Tang said that the storm was forecast to bring heavy downpours and thunderstorms this weekend for northern and central Thanh Hoa provinces when it makes landfall on Saturday morning.

Northern mountainous provinces will suffer the most from heavy rains with rainfall up to 300-400mm, flash floods and landslides, he said.

“Preparations for the storm should be completed by 7am on Saturday,” Tang added.

Before making landfall in Viet Nam, the storm is expected to pass China’s Hainan Island at midnight on Friday.

Provinces from Quang Ninh to Nam Dinh have been told to prepare for rising sea levels and tides reaching a height of 3-5 metres.

At 1pm yesterday, the eye of the storm was near the eastern part of the Hoang Sa (Paracel) Archipelago with wind speeds reaching 62-88km per hour.

The storm is moving west north-west at a speed of 15-20km per hour.

It will also cause seas rough in the Bac Bo (Tonkin) Gulf and waters around the Truong Sa (Spratly) Archipelago. Coastal areas stretching from central Binh Thuan to southernmost Ca Mau provinces are expected to see rough waters.

Cao Duc Phat, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development and Chairman of the National Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control, ordered the National Committee for Rescue and Research to set up two teams to help cope with the storm.

The committee for flood and storm prevention also sent an urgent message to northern and coastal localities on Wednesday instructing them to prepare for the storm and inform offshore fishing vessels of its progress.

Northern mountainous provinces will be required to evacuate residents from dangerous areas in case of floods and landslides.

Statistics of the committee for flood and storm prevention showed that over 36,500 fishing vessels had been told to find safe anchorage along the coast.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting, two tropical storms were forecast to hit the country this month. — VNS
