PGPPC highlighted for OHS

(VEN) – Phu Giang Paper and Packaging Company (PGPPC) aimed at sustainable development and has been very attentive to its employees in terms of living standards and occupational health and safety (OHS) conditions.

To start with a production team of 15 employees, PGPPC, located in Tam Tao Village, Phu Lam Commune, Tien Du District, Bac Ninh Province, has now registered 550 employees, three paper mills with annual capacity of 52,000 tonnes, and a packaging factory with annual capacity of 6,000 tonnes. PGPPC contributes up to one VND billion annually to the state budget.


Over the last three years, PGPPC has registered increased production and steady revenues. In 2010, the company achieved VND145 billion in revenue and paid VND2.5 billion to the state budget, ensured stable employment for 430 workers with average monthly income per capita of VND2.5 million; in 2011, it registered VND160 billion in revenue, ensured stable employment for 510 workers with average monthly income per capita of VND3 million; and last year, despite economic downturns, it still reached VND242 billion in revenue, paid VND4 billion to the state budget and created stable jobs for 550 employees.


The company has paid due attention to workers’ lives along with boosting production and trading. In order to better protect workers’ rights and interests, it established a corporate labor union in 2000. The union has played an important role in offering local workers technical training courses. To date, 17 key officers of the company have been sent to Nanning (China) on studying trips and all employees have been trained in OHS, especially for those who involved with boiler operation, paper craning, and pulp mill operation.


The union has also proposed PGPPC’s board of management to equip workers with necessary workwear and fire fighting equipment and gear. In addition, sprayers and water tanks are located in accessible places so as to facilitate fire fighting.


Annually, the company in collaboration with the Health Center in Tien Du District to perform health checks for all employees, and based on these examinations it will rearrange workers.


According to PGPPC’s labor union president Quach Cao Mui, although being a private company, PGPPC has paid health and social security premiums for its employees in accordance with the state regulations. The company also built a cafeteria to ensure supply of mid-shift meals safe for workers. In addition, the company also performs periodical check of the observance of regulations on labor protection and OHS standards.


Thanks to efforts in improving workers’ lives and working conditions, PGPPC has not experienced any OHS accident over the past few years and recently highlighted as one among typical OHS examples in Bac Ninh Province./.
