HA NOI (VNS)— Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has kicked off the month of August by hosting a conference call with his Japanese counterpart, Shinzo Abe, to strengthen bilateral ties.
During the conversation, Dung congratulated Abe and his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) on their recent election to Japan’s Upper House, saying the result reflected a vote of confidence from the Japanese people in the Government.
Speaking candidly, the Japanese PM affirmed the importance of the relationship between the two countries, saying he considered Viet Nam a reliable partner in the region.
The two leaders pledged to work closely on improving the Viet Nam-Japan Strategic Partnership and agreed to promote peace, stability and economic development in the region.
They agreed to maintain regular visits and exchanges between high-ranking leaders and build the necessary mechanisms to ensure a consistent dialogue over specific areas of cooperation.
They will also be encouraging relevant agencies to focus their efforts on an upcoming meeting of the Viet Nam-Japan Co-operation Committee, which will discuss the implementation of signed agreements between the two countries.
So far bilateral agreements have been reached on trade, investment and official development assistance (ODA).
The two PMs agreed to continue oversight of activities leading up to the celebration of the Viet Nam-Japan Friendship Year 2013, which will mark 40 years of their diplomatic ties.
The occasion will celebrate the cultural similarities between Vietnamese and Japanese people as the foundation for building a closer and more cooperative relationship.
The two leaders also compared notes on several issues concerning the international community, pledging to boost cooperation between Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). —VNS
